LabScan privacy notice
Responsible party: HBJLabs (Pty) Ltd (registration with CIPC in progress), South Africa.
Information Officer and questions: info@hbjlabs.co.za
Last updated: 25 October 2026
LabScan shows NHLS laboratory results to health professionals who have their own NHLS TrakCare access. LabScan is not made by or affiliated with the NHLS.
What LabScan stores, only on your phone
- Your NHLS TrakCare username and password, in the phone’s secure storage, used only to sign in to the NHLS on your behalf.
- The patients you save (name, folder number, ward, bed) and their results.
- Your settings.
This is personal and health information of your patients. It is encrypted, kept behind your PIN, and not sent to us or to any third party. Old results can be deleted automatically (a setting), and you can delete everything at any time.
What LabScan sends
- To the NHLS (labresults.nhls.ac.za), over an encrypted connection: your login and the specimen numbers you look up, exactly as when you use the NHLS website yourself. The NHLS’s own terms and privacy policy apply to that use.
- To WardBoard on the same phone, only when you tap it: a patient’s name, bed and one set of results.
- To WardCalc on the same phone, only when you tap it: a test, its flag and numbers, never a name.
- Feedback you choose to send goes from your own email app and contains only what you see before sending, with no patient names.
Notifications
Notifications say only how many patients have new results, never who.
Subscriptions
Paid features, when offered, are handled by Google Play. We receive no card details.
App updates
Updates to the app are downloaded from Expo, the service we use to deliver them. This sends the app’s version and your phone type, not personal information.
Your responsibility
As the health professional using LabScan you are responsible for the patient information on your phone, under POPIA and your hospital’s policies.
Your rights
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) you may ask what information we hold about you, and have it corrected or deleted. Because we hold none on our side, the information in the app is in your own hands: you can delete it at any time in the app or by uninstalling it. You may also complain to the Information Regulator (inforegulator.org.za). Questions: info@hbjlabs.co.za.
